I'm actually excited about designer babies and I hope society realizes how much of an advantage it could be to our future offspring.

If they can cure a disease then they can make humans stronger and better.

Why do we talk about "designer babies" and not "designed babies"? When I hear the former, I can't help but see a smug baby with a tiny mustache, a weird haircut, pinched mouth, trying to prove me their scrambled mess of a garbage-made clothing is art worth millions.

Really need this to work.
With sickle cell anemia, this w would be a big help to myself and others like me At least if anything for the future generation.

Why can't we use retro viruses as vectors since they can easily get into the DNA ? Is there no way to to weaken e.g HIV then put in the gene we want and change the mismatch that causes sickle cell anemia?

We need to panic! If we don't we're failing our 24 hour news cycle system. Panic! Panic! And especially be fearful of Science. Or anyone with any kind of advanced education. Are we going to ignore all the scientific conspiracies? Climate Change. Vaccinations. Evolution. Moon landings. Please people ... you're not paying attention! Science, education, etc. is bad. And we need to acknowledge that! Anyone remember them being exposed here? http://www.cc.com/video-clips/x1h7ku/the-daily-show-with-jon-stewart-weathering-fights--science--what-s-it-up-to

Can CRISPR still work on people that have already been born?

Meh. I'll just wait for the AI to figure everything out for us. Why trouble ourselves?

this stuff always reminds me of the movie GATACCA

If our genome protects itself from changes that proves we are a simulation.

Great, now I have @acapellascience's song stuck in my head again.

You guys really need to work on your sound levels. Every video has a different loudness

My sister died exactly 18 years ago from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. I don't want that gene continued to be passed on, and am not sure which side it was inherited from, not knowing whether my surviving sister or I have passed it on. I also have a friend who was diagnosed with it, but has survived into adulthood and has two daughters, who hopefully don't have it. I'm more than ready and willing to modify my genes to not pass on any bad genes.

So if the mother's DNA is faulty then it might "repair" introduced good DNA to the faulty DNA version? That really sucks...
Everyone, please watch my tiny nature videos. There is no talking in them. It is hard to find quiet places to record. Shhh!

You guys ever watch Gattaka?

I wish this worked on full humans. I want to genetically engineer myself to be one of those people who can eat whatever they want and never exercise, but still stay skinny

Can we Crispred a plant that grows an iPhone as a flower if we edit it hard enough?

This is all well and good, but how long will it be, until I get retractable claws?

there goes humanity chance of being super intelligent via genetic engineering.. to the path of being dumb shall we resume..

Pictures of what is being discussed would help people process this information better. Interesting ideas, though. :-)

Humans were never meant to play God.

Just A Person the fact that there's no proof of any existence of God, is proof he doesn't exist, I could say that there is a giant fat sky poodle who created the earth but that a anorexic elephant cat created the rest of the world, and I'd be completely accurate in saying that because as you said "there is no reliable proof for or against [my fat sky poodle and my anorexic elephant cat], so you cannot prove or disprove the existence of [my fat sky poodle and my anorexic elephant cat]"
ironic how you change god to anything else and that argument sounds just plain stupid......... maybe because there is no fat sky poodle and there is no "god"
as for reliable proof against god, there's the fact of Dinosaurs existing millions of years before humans, evolution, and the fact that we've dated the planet and found that it's much older then what the Bible said it is

There is no reliable proof for or against God, so you cannot prove or disprove the existence of God.

the existence of god isn't debatable, there are ZERO FACTS to prove it's existence, god is not real, you can believe whatever you want, just know its not real and that real world science shouldn't be held accountable to works of fiction

Kody Ballard the existence of God is debatable but I believe in a God.

William Sevy good thing Humans aren't and that God doesn't exist

Gene for radiation resistance like in cockroaches when? The Solar System isn't gonna colonize itself, lads.

It's a bit more complicated than that.

Since we are all pro science here and we watch this channel to learn more about science, I have questions. What happens to the embryos from the trials? Do they become "less perfect" lab grown babies or are they disposed of in biohazardous waste bins? Is it against the hippocratic oath to grow these babies when they will most likely live a shortened lifespan? What are the morals and ethics at hand for human interference to dna on the molecular level beyond what artificial selection could have ever done?

Probably they just dump them out. In principle there shouldn't be anything imperfect about them and could be implanted into a mother as is done with in vitro fertilization.

GATTACA?

PGD FTW!!! My daughter is a PGD baby!
Can't wait for crisper to be a thing we ca use on our next baby

We can't treat having babies as having a designer dog

May i take your order
Me:yes i will take 1 aryian baby with extra blue eyes to go.

Just kidding i acually have high hopes for genetic engineering.

If anyone has read the chemical Gardens trilogy then I think this might turn ugly but.. I'm in support of this I'm just weary because of this series! Y'all should google it fr gives you chills lol

I imagine there will be a kind of butterfly effect from gm entering our gene pool.
Zombie apocalypse is still on the cards

Well that's disappointing. I was hoping for genetically engineered humans sooner rather than later.

This is messed up.what do the researchers do with all the human beings used for their experiments?

APE KONG GAMER and to answer your earlier question, no it's not messed up, two people donated dna for scientific research, all cells are "alive", so the concept that when a egg and sperm meet they then become alive is false all you did was create a complete(as in all 23 chromosomes) cell than will then begin to divide and replicate, embryo cells at the stage the research was done at aren't human beings just human cells

APE KONG GAMER pretty sure I know what happens hence the Microbiology degree on my wall, these fertilized eggs aren't human beings yet, at this point there literally nothing more then a couple cells dividing rapidly to form cellular mass which then begins to develop organs and organs systems and eventually is born as a human being at the embryo stage there nothing more then cells

Kody Ballard i suggest that you google what happens when an egg is fertilized

they aren't human beings, there just cells, take a biology class please

Tdangerously somebody jerked off and somebody donated their eggs. when sperm meets an egg the egg becomes fertilized thus creating life. The life of these fertilized eggs is terminated once the scientists are done with them. You don't find that messed up?

Build a Elysium machine

Hopefully eventually we can use this kind of technology to counteract the absolute slaughtering we have given natural selection.

People who oppose this hate one thing and one thing only...

People who are gonna be objectively better than them in every way.

Totally blacked out in the middle of the video.

the only real concern i see with genetic engineering is making people more obedient, or more prone to being a beliver, etc.... In short making them more likely to obey you.

so yeah we're a long way away from that.

We could engineer humans like the alien moves and make them perfect gods.

Editing human embryos is dispicable and evil.

Daniel Swagman and your rational behind that comment is?

who the hell?

I wonder if scientists can figure how to get the DNA to accept the donor DNA during repair, that would be interesting. Maybe they can "CRISPR/cas9 it" (donor DNA) into the egg cell first somehow, before inserting the sperm and cas9 enzyme. Then we can utilize the mechanism that the sperm and egg cells naturally use to repair DNA in a different way. Wish I could fully grasp the science behind this; I think it's so interesting!

(Meant to write "DNA template" not "donor DNA")
