Good education is teaching kids how to think for themselves and teaching them how to ask meaningful questions in search of truth. Religion is all about control, conformity, and authority. Religions don't fight fair. They use social pressure, rhetoric, child indoctrination, persecution, boycotting, to expand their influence because their foundational ideas will not stand up to scrutiny of scientific inquiry.

I think Maher is confusing Dawkins with Sam Harris. Harris is the neuro guy.. Dawkins is a biologist.

"Poor little diddums" has just been added to my vocabulary. Thanks once again, Mr. Dawkins.

Evolution, like all scientific phenomenons, doesn't rely on beliefs, but in observation and evidence, instead. Therefore, regarding evolution for instance, the term "believing" is incorrect. The right term to be utilized should be "agreement" or "acceptance" of it's existence as a biological fact.

Richard Dawkins is starting to get older than I'm comfortable with. Mr. Dawkins, please... Stop aging. Just stop. Alright? Thank you. You are not allowed to die, so if you do, you will receive a firm spanking.

People who don't believe in evolution are not all ignorant stupid or insane; they're mostly chicken shit and choose to live in denial. Deep down, they have to believe in evolution because it's so fucking obvious and indisputable. I mean, the whole universe is nothing BUT evolution!

I'm always annoyed that Bill Maher and others think that most people inherently know the difference between regular Muslims and ''radical islam extremists''. And that just because Bill Maher doesn't ''intend'' to be bigoted that just resolves everything he says about the Muslim faith and the people who practice it.

The average American who watches this show probably has no idea what the Koran is, let alone what it says. The average American probably has no close relationships with Muslim people. Also, America has been at war in predominately Muslim countries for 15+ years, So how can Americans avoid thinking that the woman wearing a hijab or the man wearing a turban at the grocery store is an extremist?

Bill should know that our media is very good at taking certain individuals of a group and making them into the default representative of the entire group. So I can definitely understand some media figures, especially those outside of the Muslim faith, who decline to speak about a culture they have no familiarity with.

The science of WWII brought out the worse in humanity. In Albert Speer's Third Reich memoirs he pointed out Hitler's leanings towards Islam, but in no way were any of them fooled by any such "God," they were too canny. sophisticated...

Religion can do the same. The leaders aren't swayed by facts they deemed as "surface," they're too profound, God-fearing...

I wasn't aware Richard Dawkins was a neuroscientist

He isn't. Somebody on Maher's staff got Dawkins and Harris mixed up apparently.

He doesn't look to well

He's not a neuroscientist, he's an evolutionary biologist.

I dont know why he says that the Bible and science dont mix, other than he's just another athiest who has not studied both. Someone ask them both, how did the writer of the book of Job know that 4 constellations of stars are ' bound' together and somehow science now claims that dark matter is what ' binds' the galaxies together????. No flight for humans over 3000 years ago was there? So either way it appears we are looking at a superior intelligence that told him that, as in other ancient texts about ancient peoples. Just because its stated in the biblical text their feathers get ruffled. I suppose if it its in the Mahabharata or Mayan writings, it wouldn't be as terrifying to them? Either way, the information came from.' up there'.

Yeah, you need to find a way to prove anything that you are saying. And yes, other religions say OTHER things which also leads us to believe that none of them are correct in their mythologies. And I have read where muslims will show where their book "predicted" everything from satellites and cell phones to airplanes and high speed rails. But that's pretty easy to do AFTER the fact, none of these were mentioned until after man invented them. Your bible also says light and day and night was created before the sun and claims to think that yahweh thought humans could build a tower to "heaven". Then it lost control of heaven, lost control of the Garden, and lost control of the planet so it murdered every living thing on earth. Then it thought that people with mental illness had "demons" and that blindness could be cured with fish guts or spittle. You think THAT sounds like a "superiour intelligence"? I think you're setting the bar pretty low.

I abhor all religions and one day it will be completely absent in all societies when future generations look back in their history they will  feel deep sorrow for those that had opened their minds to reality..

neuroscientist?

No its not because we don't read news papers. I'm more informed than either of these two. I love Dawkins. But the issue here is that Islam is synonymous with Arabs and your disproportionate bashing of Islam directly effects how Arabs are generally treated. They are not just victims of Islam which of course they are. They are sociological victims of us! And the way we present them in our culture! I've read all your books and respect you greatly Richard but if you don't understand and concede to this point you are a doddering old fool

Please learn about Resource Based Economy! :) Richard Dawkins rocks :)

It wasn't until listening to Jordan Peterson that I was able to put words to an issue I have with Dawkins. Peterson, in his discussion with Sam Harris, basically agreed with the differences between religion and science and why they use different levels of reasoning but calling the pious stupid does nothing but create animosity. I love Dawkins, and I think he's 100% correct, but he will never break any ground until he realizes that telling someone they're wrong flat out will do nothing but make the person he's speaking to defend their belief.

Red Hunteur On the subject of science and truth, I like Karl Poppers idea that science doesn't reveal truths it reduces uncertainty. I think it's fair to say that the internet provides plenty of information but almost an equal amount of uncertainty.
Again, I think Dawkins is spot in with his ideas, but I can't ignore a tone that I perceive as absolutely certainty. A good scientist should never think like that, and that tone of elitism does nothing but alienate those who are ignorant to your ideas.
In most cases, the exteremly devout were born into a life of pioty and to attack those beliefs is to attack their entire life.
If we want religion to eventually be thought of as obsolete, like alchemy, we can't devalue the believers as people. We need to continue to respectlvy state our case, point out the issues with the belief system, promote critical thinking, and let the religions evolve into something better.
When you decided to leave your faith, did you do it because someone with a chip in their shoulder called you a stupid sheep, or was it because you discovered the faults with the ideas on your own?

Well, if they don't find the fight within themselves to prove his criticism wrong, then wrong people will remain wrong. We live in the world of the internet; if they made the effort they could find out. It's not the job of the educated to explain everything to someone if they actually care about what is true. Unfortunately, too many religious idiots CHOOSE to stay in the dark through their indoctrination into religion. I got out, and so did many people like me. I didn't let my emotions run my life; I wanted the truth.

I have read all of Richard's books. It's such a shame that he's not able to figure out that religion is just language and about numbers and language. The soul means fantasy. How is he not able to figure that out? Wow

Saying that we should teach creationism and evolution is like saying we should teach the moon landing and also the conspiracy theory that the moon landing was fake. One is obviously not real or founded in logic so why would you deliberately perpetuate falsehoods?

He's not a neuro-scientist I don't think, where did that come from?

Abolish all religion. It's destroying humanity, freedom, equality, rationality, logic, but as Dawkins says liberals hijacking the definition of freedom of speech, is an epidemic. Just because you're offended, doesn't mean you are right. Grow some fucking balls liberal pussies, and fight for what is right. Not bullshit. Best regards from an atheist neither right or left... Science will prevail

Dawkins is a remarkable human.

"Soul is the catch in the throat when you look up at the milky way. Soul is the swelling in the chest you get when you listen to a Schubert quartet or read a Shakespeare sonnet."

This sounds just as irrational and unscientific to me as believing in a spiritual soul or in God. But because he has experienced THIS type of "soul", he doesn't think he needs to prove it exists (it sounds like he never even stopped to think about it).

Well, I have experienced the spirit and I don't really need to be able to find it in a lab to know it IS.

Dawkins doesn't believe in macro evolution. Some of these people on stage are not atheist (dawkins) not what so ever, but are from the synagogue of Satan. They have their father's devil tongue to hypnotize the naive, the lonely, the misunderstood, the outcast, the depress, the mentally ill, the sinister, the weak, and the discourage people of the world.
Satan is in the soul collecting business, and to the dark lord every atheist is a win for the devil, and the devil will collect the atheist soul. Not many youtube videos with atheist debating Satan worshipers.(not one video on youtube) Is it possible the reason there not any atheist debating a Satan worshiper is atheism and Satan worshipers have the same owner, and the same agenda. I have never heard a atheist scream to a Satan worshiper " their is no Satan or the devil with their fallen stars (angels) here on earth collecting soul for the underworld". The Satan worshiper would agree.
How many hospitals, universities, and charities around the world has Satan worshipers or athiest built? It just seemed logical that athiest would target state worshipers more than Christians.
The atheist and evolutionist will scream " ape people" until we believe in evolution

Neuroscientist? That would be Sam Harris. Richard Dawkins is an evolutionary biologist.

A simple statement of fact, Dawkins is the stupid one. DARWIN'S EVOLUTION IS WRONG. He knew nothing about DNA CODE which can only come from an intelligent source. There is a real motor that propels bacteria. Absolute evidence that DNA comes from a computer.

No it doesn't, it affirms that all life on earth is related and that us, humans, have common ancestry with all other forms of life on earth.

Love Maher and Dawkins... but they don't articulate a completely cogent argument here.

Both have been dissed by the “Regressive Left.” And both are miffed about it, rightly so. Yet they both admit that these "censors" on the left are "on our side and we on theirs," and that their motives are "laudable in attempting to defend a persecuted minority." They both condemn a seeming "epidemic" of university administrators capitulating to overly passionate students, and of "running scared of anyone who might come along and say something offensive." Maher reminds that "the truth hurts." So far, so good.

But then Dawkins suggests that universities are scared of "open speech," and Maher claims that the leftist censors don't know what "abusive means." Now both have lost proper perspective and discernment.

First of all, "open speech?" What is this? Does this mean that our public institutions and facilities should indulge anything? Unlike conservatives, true liberals don't ban or burn or excommunicate or expunge anyone or any idea from our culture. As the First Amendment forbids, we do not pass laws that prohibit "free speech," nor take action to block publishing or dissemination of any book, media appearances, advertisements, or personal presentations at private venues. So liberals never act to "shut down free speech" (as conservatives have actually done multitudinous times in history... ask Socrates or Giordano Bruno... or Jesus). Yet we do hold that some ideas and beliefs and speech are not conducive to the "general welfare" (as encouraged by the Constitution) and therefore do not qualify to be aided and abetted by public institutions and facilities, most particularly by edifices of "higher education."

Do we not all agree upon this general concept? If so, then we certainly do not believe in "open speech" when it comes to use of our public facilities. Or, let's see... should we fling the university hall and civic center open to proponents of restoring slavery, child pornography, wife beating, female genital mutilation, dog-meat cuisine, Sharia law, eugenics, bomb-making 101, neo-Nazis, and ten thousand other onerous and dangerous and foul themes?

There is a "qualitative double spectrum" of ideas that runs from true to false, and from good to evil. The public sphere - especially institutions of public education - can and must differentiate between these, and act to protect the public from the latter. Yes, perhaps it gets a bit tricky sometimes... and when in doubt, the bias should lean toward allowance. But in practice, the choices are often quite stark. In shutting down Dawkins, who brings a message of truth and goodness (even if religious people would disagree) the Berkeley radio station gravely erred.

Meanwhile, both Maher and Dawkins should not balk at but fully step into their role as "abusers" and "persecutors." They are truth-tellers, and the truth hurts. Those getting hurt think of it as abuse and persecution. Remember Harry Truman: "The Republicans say I give them hell; I just tell them the truth and they think it's hell."

When Maher says that "Criticism of religion is not bigotry" he is right-on, and has touched on a key difference between the type of "abuse" and "persecution" employed by liberals and that of conservatives.

Both sides attempt to abuse and persecute the ideas and beliefs of the other side. Nothing wrong with that. Let's meet on the Field of Ideas and see who wins (though conservatives consistently play unfair with distortion and deceit). But conservatives don't stop there: they abuse and persecute the selfhood of a huge swath of "others." Real bullying and bigotry disparages not just ideas and beliefs but aspects of the person that are difficult or impossible to change (i.e. gender, skin color and other physical characteristics, language, ability, social status, etc.). This is the crucial difference between the types of "abusers," one of ideas alone and the other for ideas and personhood... that the Berkeley radio station utterly failed to discern.

That so many conservatives consider their faith-not-fact-based beliefs "who they are" and fully engage in the most egregious of all "identity politics" (proudly white.. and most of the worst, proudly male) simply demonstrates how their twisted mindset actually runs contrary to both truth and goodness. Cancelling the provocateurs Milo and Coulter from speaking at Berkeley was decent discernment in action. They don't bring truth, and they don't bring goodness. They bring abuse and persecution to the selfhood of BILLIONS. They do not serve "higher education" but rather the dumbing down and dividing of our country. But the university owes an apology to Dawkins.

Long live "Free and Open Speech!" Let anyone publish and seek out their various, willing, venues for publicity for their gems or rubbish... and may the cream rise to the top and the crap find the toilet. But nothing in the Constitution requires us to publicly facilitate all messages. We should always be on our toes to differentiate "free speech" from what Buddha called "Right Speech." Now, if only those paragons of "free speech," the conservative universities and institutions, would follow this virtuous pathway. Let's see BYU or Baylor or Liberty University or Oral Roberts University invite Richard Dawkins to speak. Don't hold your breath. At least there was an invitation to cancel at Berkeley.

This “epidemic” is a temporary phase of non-discernment at the university level, and will soon (5, 10 years?) be corrected. Meanwhile, conservatives are attempting to take full advantage of the internecine squabbling to discredit and diminish liberalism as a whole. While discussions of the problem are right and proper – and we can clearly understand while people such as Maher and Dawkins and Sam Harris might want to grind that axe – we cannot seriously conflate this to one of the great problems of our nation and world…. or allow it to distract us from those issues that are (almost all of them created by conservatism in one form or another). That would represent even worse discernment than anything any college administrators have done.
